The MacMillan Mental Performance Scoring Protocol TM

This mental performance program protocol is designed for elite athletes and competitive teams, and evaluated using applied performance indicators grounded in sport psychology and high-performance research.

Outcomes measured are related to self-regulation, pressure response, and behavioral consistency — the factors that most directly impact performance reliability.

Over the course of the program, athletes consistently demonstrate:

  • Faster recovery after mistakes

  • Improved emotional control in games and competitions

  • Greater confidence in pressure situations

  • Practical tools they actively use when things get hard

Parents often notice athletes becoming:

  • More resilient after setbacks

  • Less reactive to mistakes

  • More focused and self-directed

  • Better equipped to handle pressure both in sport and daily life

Across teams, programs demonstrate measurable improvements in:

  • Response to pressure situations

  • Speed of recovery following errors

  • Emotional regulation during competition

  • Consistent application of mental strategies in training and games

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s helping athletes become more consistent, confident, and capable under pressure, when it counts most.

These outcomes are tracked through:

  • Pre- and post-program athlete assessments

  • Observable behavior change under pressure

  • Coach-based performance observations

The result is greater predictability and composure in high-stakes environments, aligned with the expectations of D1 and high-performance pathways.

The 7 Skills of Mental Performance

1 - Elite Mindset

With the right mindset, you  can overcome self-doubt and unlock your full potential. By developing an elite mindset, you’ll start to view setbacks—once seen as failures—as valuable opportunities for growth. This perspective shift can have a profound impact on results, and enable you to achieve your true potential.

2 - Awareness

We will discuss how thoughts work, and how important it is to talk to yourself not listen to yourself.  Awareness is the first step to being able to change and improve yourself. It will leave you feeling empowered.

3 - Focus

Athletes who succeed don’t do so because they somehow avoid adversity. They succeed because they develop a skill set that allows them to overcome the challenges they face… focus is a crucial component of helping you do that.  With practice, you can have a highly trained level of present moment focus so you can block out distractions, navigate adversity, and perform consistently at your best.

4 - Confidence

Confidence is an action, not a feeling that you either have or don’t have. Once you understand what’s involved in doing confidence, you’ll know you can always have it!  Your Body Language, Focus and Self-Talk all play a part in whether you are performing your very best or not. And for the times that you’re not, we will create a Recognize/Release/Refocus Routine to get you back to playing your best.

5 - Process Over Outcome

As an athlete, one of the biggest battles you face is this: finding the energy and initiative to do the day-to-day routine tasks necessary to reach your goals, even when you don’t feel like it.  By developing the Process Over Outcome skill set, you can redirect focus to what is within your control, let go of what you can’t, and aim for daily improvement.

6 - Visualization

When you begin to train the skill set of visualization you will notice that you are better able to stay calm under pressure and focus on the present task, rather than getting caught up in the past or future.  You will also decrease the amount of physical time it takes to both acquire and master a physical skill. It is ideal for the injured athlete who still wants to work on their game while they can’t physically yet.

7 - Routines & Habits of Excellence

Consistently performing at a high level requires the ability to modify behavior and develop the structure needed to execute the plan.  High-performers know the power of routine — they know how to build and break habits, and they have a certain amount of structure guiding what they do each day.
